Education Projects
First and foremost, the Arkansas Wildlife Federation believes conservation education is the key to good stewardship of our natural resources. We strongly support and participate in efforts that are designed to help both young people and adults better understand the environment and issues that affect our natural resources. Our best conservation education tool is our publication, Arkansas Fish & Wildlife. This newsprint tabloid is published six times a year and has an estimated readership of 12,000 per issue. The Federation sponsors seminars on a wide variety of topics. Featuring experts in various fields, some seminars deal with issues like forest management and wetlands and water quality. Others focus on hunting, fishing, or nature appreciation. Seminars are often collaborative efforts with other organizations or agencies. In cooperation with the National Wildlife Federation, the AWF conducts an annual Conservation Achievement Awards Program to honor citizens and organizations that have excelled in various natural-resource related endeavors. Award categories include outstanding efforts in conservation education, wildlife conservation, forest conservation and other categories. This program not only honors deserving Arkansans, it helps to heighten environmental awareness across the state. In conjunction with the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission, the AWF also presents special awards to Arkansans who excel in the Acres for Wildlife Program. This program is conducted by the Game & Fish Commission to improve wildlife habitats on private property. AWF often holds wildlife art contests featuring Arkansas wildlife artists. The winning painting is made into a print, and these are often used as AWF membership recruitment tools (see the Membership section for details). The AWF offers a wide range of conservation and outdoor recreation programs. These are available for schools, civic clubs, and other gatherings, and there is no charge for these programs. Please contact our office for information. The AWF often sponsors political candidate forums. While the AWF is a nonpartisan organization and is prohibited from endorsing any candidate, it sponsors public education forums where citizens can ask political candidates how they stand on various conservation and environmental issues. The AWF's 105-acre Snyder Wetlands, located on the eastern border of North Little Rock, is available to schools that wish to study wetlands, water, forestry, or wildlife related topics. It's an undeveloped natural paradise that is easily accessible to any Central Arkansas school. For more information about our ongoing education projects, please contact our office at any time.
